We are excited to launch a NEW pilot program called AMP Career Chats! 

AMP Career Chats are one-time meeting opportunities for students to talk with alumni and other professionals who can serve as mentors. These career chats can occur via an informal conversation over coffee, the phone or video conference. AMP Career Chats are a way that students can learn from multiple mentors about their diverse career paths and get advice on the college-to-career transition. Who can participate? Any current student in the Aztec Mentor Program can request a one-time meeting with any participating mentor. 

How does it work? Students request a meeting with up to 3 mentors each month. Mentors have 4 days to respond to the request. 

What is the time commitment? We recommend a 60 minute meeting with a mentor. It is up to the student and mentor to determine day, time and location. 

How can you help us with this new program? Please submit feedback for every meeting you have so we know what works or needs to be modified to improve this new AMP Career Chats experience.

Here are four steps for students to consider when reaching out to schedule a one-time career chat with a mentor:

Step 1: What Do You Want To Learn From A Mentor? 
  • Evaluate your career interests, skills and values
  • Identify an occupation/industry you want to learn more about
  • Consider how a professional mentor can offer you insight into a career field


Step 2: Do Your Research.
  • Review the professionals background in their AMP and/or LinkedIn profiles
  • Research the companies they have worked for and where they currently work
  • Review the companies mission statement, types of services provided, and demographic information (location, size, etc)


Step 3: Create Your Questions. 
  • Ask questions about the professional’s background, work environment, company benefits, industry advice, job market, and advice they have for entering the industry or organization
  • Create well-thought-out questions. See link above for examples *
  • Prepare to ask the questions in a professional manner


Step 4: Prepare and Follow-up to be Successful. 
  • Dress professionally—business casual recommended
  • Prepare to talk about your interest in the mentors' experience, your career goals, and any advice about entering the profession or organization
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early
  • Follow-up with a thank you note to make a good impression
